Seminar Scope

The way in which we label, name and ‘speak of’ family, as well as how the changes in contemporary family making have been reflected within the legal domain, are becoming important questions for the future of family law and of kinship studies.

In this seminar, we are interested in exploring the interplay between (multiple) parenthood, kinship terminology, as well as the role of law.

We particularly welcome early-career scholars to present their research on the broad topic of non-traditional kinship formations, kinship terminology, and family-making from socio-legal perspectives. Selected early career scholars will be coupled with renowned scholars in the field, making a fruitful exchange possible.

Possible research questions could include, but are not limited to;

• How does kinship terminology manifest itself within families of non-traditional forms?
• How does the duality of the family (two parents) evolve in light of new reproductive technology (ART)?
• What are the tensions between modern family law and the changes in contemporary family making?
• How can we critically assess the future of family law with regards to modern parenthood?

Practical information

The conference will be held at the Academia Belgica in Rome (Italy) on the 17^th and 18^th of May 2018.

The language of the conference is English. There is no registration fee. Coffee breaks, reception on 17 May and lunch on 18 May are offered.

The conference will be open to public.

Call for papers

Presenters will be selected based on the submitted abstracts.
